By looking backward, I can begin to live forward by becoming who I really am. Attachment shapes behavior and thinking. Survival skills from earlier life become maladaptive barriers to growth. Addiction and mental health problems often reflect a False Self. If I have the courage to confront the masking qualities of this False Self, I am ready for change and to allow the True Self, my authentic and spiritual nature, to emerge. While we cannot make these changes alone, readiness is indicated by my willingness to engage beyond therapy in Twelve Step programs or other means of engaging with others.
Extensive experience with Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation has shaped my approach to meeting individuals where they are and helping them find their voice as they grapple with chemical dependency or dual diagnosis issues. Healing starts with letting go of the misplaced shame and stigma and embracing willingness for change..
I believe that it is difficult to sustain change without deconstructing the set up behavioral responses that created the survival skills that sabotage efforts to change. Specific tools that help include attachment narrative, grief and mourning the lost possibilities and various modalities of psychotherapy. Additional applications: Family and couples therapy.
