Who are you and who do you want to be? For many people, that’s a terrifying question riddled with feelings like anxiety, insecurity, hopelessness, fear, dread, etc. Yet you’re here, on PsychologyToday, hoping to move closer to the person that you want to be. That’s where we start. The first question that I ask during an intake session is “when you imagine being successfully done with therapy, what does your life look like?” Well, really the first question is "how are you?" followed by shared laughter at the conditioned "good, how are you" response. Then that vision of yourself is what we use to guide us along the therapy journey.
I use a variety of approaches that all focus on looking at the individual as a whole, rather than a medical diagnosis to be fixed. I primarily use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on finding balance between acceptance and change. The main goal is to identify your values and increase flexibility with thoughts, feelings, and actions
Starting therapy with a new therapist is at best a little awkward and at worst terrifying. Being vulnerable with a stranger, even a therapist, is scary. I promise to sit with you as we build the trust and comfort that you need to allow me to join you on your therapy journey. I often work with teens and young adults and am an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist.
