There are many types of trauma, and trauma is subjective. Trauma can happen to your body, mind, and spirit. It distorts our identity, causes us to doubt our purpose, and influences our sense of meaning. We feel unsafe, alone, unknown, and scared. Some of the most challenging types of trauma to overcome are pre-verbal or early childhood abuse/neglect and relational or attachment trauma. EMDR is a protocol allowing someone to reprocess trauma quickly and with minimal risk of retraumatization. Focus is given to maintaining psychological safety at all times, and you are in complete control of the process.
First, you will learn skills to feel secure and calm. When this phase of treatment is complete, we begin reprocessing traumatic memories. The third and final stage of treatment is figuring out who you are now, finding meaning in your new life, and building healthy relationships.
Through education, training, and consultations through the Houston Galveston Institute and the EMDR Institute, I gained the theory, knowledge, and practice to treat complex trauma, including relational or attachment trauma, childhood abuse and neglect, and dissociative disorders.
