When we struggle with symptoms such as depression, anxiety, or obsessive thinking, it is a signal that some aspect of our inner life is being ignored. This repression may be a learned behavior from our upbringing (you may not have been allowed to feel or talk about x, y, or z), or it may simply be a result of not having the time or support to look inside. Either way, therapy is a way to change this. By striving to fully share and find the true meaning of our pain, with the support of a skilled therapist, we can relieve it.
Symptoms are like knots. They are made up of emotional experiences that we have overlooked that have therefore gotten tangled up inside. By bravely noticing, feeling, and understanding the unique threads of your experience, we untie the knot.
I work psychoanalytically with both individuals and couples. This means that while I believe coping strategies are helpful at times, they do not heal us in the longterm. To fully heal from mental and emotional pain we have to get to the root of it. This is the journey of freeing ourselves from the past so we can reap the joys and pleasures of the present.
