Therapy for Couples/Marriage, Relationships, & High Achievers - You’ve achieved a lot, and parts of life are awesome. Yet, with all you’re juggling, you often don’t take space for yourself or your most important relationships. With so many people depending on you, sometimes slowing down doesn’t feel like an option. You sometimes even feel guilty for being stressed because some people have things a lot worse. You are used to being a high-achiever (even if you don't say it). You probably don't need a diagnosis and could get by without therapy. But your stress matters, and you deserve support.

Great Relationships aren’t great because they have no challenges or struggles. Great relationships are great because individuals choose to find a way to make the relationship work. Sometimes, that includes relationship/family counseling. As a family and relationship therapist, I am here to help you work through the many challenges and struggles that often prevent couples/families from moving forward. I believe in individualizing treatment to help each family member/partner feel heard and loved.

“It’s just not working. Maybe we aren’t meant to be. It shouldn’t be this hard. I just need my space. Nothing I do is ever good enough. I feel like we’re just roommates." These are some of the statements that bring us to our knees in relationships, and hopefully get us in the door to therapy. As humans, we are biologically wired to connect with others. Since conception, we have some level of dependency that our society just expects us to “grow out of” as we age. While in reality, we need a secure relationship with another to feel comfortable enough to take necessary risks in our individual lives.

My view on therapy is very simple, though not always easy: 'through relationships, we heal’. Many of the barriers that inhibit healthy relationships include negative self-talk, fear of judgement, and our need to maintain a sense of control, especially when we are deeply hurt or wounded. Trauma does not discriminate and it does not wait for an opportune time to present, but we can make sense of it and heal old wounds that hold us back from really connecting with those we love.

Trauma can disrupt the fabric of every part of our day. We see other people walking around, seemingly living a happy and peaceful existence and feel like we would give anything to just have that. It can be so hard to even acknowledge how much trauma has affected our lives. We lie to ourselves and say “it wasn’t that bad” or think that we should be able to move on. But the truth is, trauma can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and isolated.

You said you would never stay with someone who cheated. You can’t believe he did this. It's like a nightmare. You are considering divorce but you want to believe him and deep down you want to get through this if it’s possible. You thought you knew him. Could it be possible he loves you like he says he does when he hurt you like this? Did he even consider you? It’s embarrassing to bring this up to anyone. You wonder if people will judge you if you stay and will they ever be able to see him in the same light if you tell people and are able to work it out? You have already talked for hours and don't know how you can get through this.

I believe that everyone has the capacity and strength to make meaningful changes in their lives. For over ten years, I have helped adults of all backgrounds and identities work through symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, trauma and addiction. I also have experience helping individuals navigate the emotional distress of surviving violence, homelessness and the criminal justice system. I believe the therapeutic relationship can be a validating experience and an essential component of the healing process. We all need a space to feel safe enough to express ourselves without judgement or shame.

I work with individuals and couples who want to actively create the lives or relationships they desire. By helping clients identify the blocks keeping them stuck, they are free to explore and experiment with more creative and effective ways of living. Group counseling can be especially helpful increasing self-awareness, creating support and experiencing validation.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Phoenix?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
