I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a passion for helping individuals understand their unique wiring with compassion and curiosity. The more understanding we have of ourselves, the greater freedom and joy we will have in life. The brain is such a beautiful piece of us and I am continuously amazed at how it protects us when we need it to. Much of the work I do is assisting you in helping your brain and body reduce defenses when we truly are safe. I believe that taking an honest, directive and nurturing approach is the key to successful treatment. The predominate therapeutic modalities I use are EMDR, CBT, IFS and TRE.

I believe that most people have the answers within themselves to work through their own problems - my role is to be there with you through the process. I have experience helping people who are struggling with anxiety and depression, or who are numbing out through substance use. My clients are often working through life transitions and other challenging situations, such as relationship issues, grief, or chronic pain. Perhaps you have not been handling your emotions very well. You may even feel hopeless, or unsure how to articulate what you are feeling. Therapy is a collaborative journey to a more healthy state of mind.

I believe that we are all on a similar journey in life....to be fully connected and authentic people, and to integrate the different parts of ourselves so that we can experience love and joy and meaningful relationships. In our work together it is my hope that we can explore the different parts of yourself that keeps you from these connections and explore what it means to feel safe. Through exploring shame and early childhood trauma, depression and anxiety, as well as body love and acceptance, we can work together to support a deepening of your self-awareness and find compassion and connection to heal and nurture your deepest self.

There are so many different approaches and therapists out there, it can be really overwhelming to find the right fit. It takes a lot of energy and courage to then reach out to a therapist to start this process of recovery. I get it, it's tough, but it's worth it. We all want to get to the other side where we are able to manage the ups and downs the way we envision, but because of negative feelings and events, sometimes we get stuck from making that connection, which is why therapy can be helpful to support moving forward.

Okay, so I'm thinking if you're here looking for a therapist, maybe you feel like your life has become a complete shit show. Or maybe you're just so sick and tired of the same old, same old, but you don't know how to stop or change it. Or maybe you feel frozen in time by the trauma you experienced in your life. Maybe you feel so stuck that any sort of hopeful, positive, and rewarding future is completely out of your reach. OR maybe it's something else like the inability to manage your emotions, or stop using, or push past the storm or grief.

I have great respect for individuals willing to engage in the therapy. It is not an easy process, but it does provide an opportunity for real change and healing. I have spent much of my career working with individuals struggling with issues of addiction, depression and anxiety, and other severe and persistent mental illness and personality disorders. Much time has also been spent working with those recovering from a history of trauma or history of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse.

"We are all just walking each other home." - Rumi Hello, I am Bo. I am a licensed psychotherapist, licensed clinical addiction specialist, and psychiatric social worker. Thank you for considering me as your clinician. I understand it is difficult to reach out for help. Right now, you may be navigating feelings of shame, embarrassment, and anger. I want you to know, I have been there too, in the middle of the storm, darkness all around. Sometimes in life and in our relationships we all can become "stuck".

The world is a complicated place. And sometimes the best way to make sense of it all is to sit down with someone and talk it out. When we begin to speak freely about ourselves, we gain not only the opportunity to be heard and understood- We begin to map the richly resourced, vast, and sometimes difficult terrain of our inner lives. In my experience, the best kind of conversation - the kind that heals, energizes & changes lives - is thoughtfully paced and as free as possible from the pressures and expedience that can sometimes rule our daily lives.

www.lissafriedman.com - I like to help people find the deep knot of their pattern, gently lovingly untie it, and bring healing to the wound. I have been a therapist for about 30 years, and in private Practice since 1987. While my style is eclectic, it is my warmth, compassion, and acceptance that underlie all of my work. I try to provide an environment, much like a container, for my clients to open to their own natural self compassion and acceptance. Seeing each person as whole, rather than deficient provides an environment for people to come to a natural place of healing.

I feel passionate about serving those who have experienced trauma, particularly attachment-based trauma. Above all, stable and consistent connection for someone with an attachment-based trauma can make all the difference in the world. I believe there is great power in holding a space for someone to feel heard and understood, as many folks do not have that safe space with anyone in their life. I also have experience working with folks with substance use challenges. I find that substances can often be what someone turns to when they don’t have the tools and support they need to manage the challenges they are facing.

Life is simply too much to navigate alone. We all need the support of trusted others to witness and process the changing tides of our lives with us. You may find yourself needing a lot of reassurance, not trusting yourself, having trouble making decisions, or feeling disconnected from your loved ones. It feels like you’re in charge of other people’s feelings, and it's your responsibility to “fix” everything. If something goes wrong, you’re the first one to spring into action. You're doing the heavy lifting in your relationships, and you’re really good at anticipating others’ needs. But what about your own?

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Asheville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
