As a person, a human being...life is just hard. Sometimes it is helpful to connect with someone that can help guide you through "the hard." Here at Glasshouse Effect Psychotherapy Center, I have experience working with adults and adolescents dealing with depression, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, and dual diagnosis. Together, we can work on coping skills, resolving conflict, setting boundaries, effective communication, and confident decision-making.

Therapy is a partnership in which we take the time to slow down together and look compassionately at what’s happening inside of you and in your relationships. It’s a courageous act in service of becoming a fuller version of you.

The desire to feel understood, seen, and connected is universal, yet we live in a time where satisfying, intimate relationships seem rare. Specializing in relationship issues and trauma, I utilize attachment theory, positive psychology, and systems theories (IFS, RLT, EFT) to address your concerns. I can empower you with tools that help you foster strong and trusting relationships - not only with others, but also with yourself. Having a background in physical health, I like to incorporate mindfulness and somatic exercises into therapy, emphasizing the mind-body connection.

As athletes, it's easy to forget that if we don't mind our mental health, we can feel detached from ourselves, team, and loved ones. In the world of athletics, this happens all too often. Sometimes, we can turn to friends, family, mentors to help us turn it around. Other times, we need additional help. As a former Division 1 & professional athlete, as well as a coach at the club and collegiate levels, I provide a safe and empathetic space for athletes, coaches, and their families to work through challenges. After beginning this work at Baylor Athletics, I strive to continue investing in wellness for the athletic community.

I work with individuals that want to feel better but do not seem to know how. Whether it's surges of weekly anxiety, recovering from heart breaking loss, or an inability after achieving all we set out to do to feel good about ourselves, my clients have hit a wall and their coping skills just aren't working as well anymore. I believe that everyone holds the knowledge they need to heal and move forward inside and that with the help of a guide (therapist) and a few tools (therapeutic methods), they can uncover this knowledge and feel better, each and every day.

As a nonbinary trans guy and gender affirmative therapist, I know how scary it is to interact with providers who are poorly informed about issues facing the trans and nonbinary community. Having a clinician who is informed and affirmative can make a huge difference. I specialize in helping individuals navigate their gender journey and provide support to the LGBTQIA+ community. Since we are more than our gender or sexuality, I also work with a variety of other issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, general life transitions, self esteem, assertiveness and boundary setting, to name a few.

Have you been struggling to connect with your partner or family? Is it becoming harder to understand one another and resolve conflict? If you are seeking relief from these common relationship stressors, I can help! Initiating couples or family therapy is anxiety provoking, since most of us would rather not talk about the things that bother us - and this makes sense! Why would we want to talk about intense topics such as trust, anger, intimacy, money, or parenting? But you're here and it's very brave to start therapy and face challenges, because ultimately it is what helps us enhance connection and strengthen relationships.

You’re overlooking yourself while over-extending for others, and you're over it. Tasks, responsibilities, and commitments pile on, and you're left wondering what contortions your schedule will make to fit them all in. You're getting that “running on empty” memo from fatigue. And as you take time with the people that matter most to you, it’s hard not to be distracted by stress and worry which has you missing out on enjoying the moment fully. Life may be feeling like you're trying to take a deep and satisfying breath but it falls short because it feels blocked. And here is where we cross paths!

I have experience working with diverse clients with a variety of needs. The bulk of my career has been working with LGBTQ+ teens, adults with chronic illnesses, and people who use drugs in harm reduction outreach settings. A through-line in these experiences is recognizing the impact biology as well as its interactions with our social environment has on mental & physical health. As such, I apply a systems approach to understand the factors impacting a client and then leverage client strengths to achieve their goals. I welcome conversations about how structural factors impact health and how therapy can be one tool toward healing.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Austin?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
