I love working with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. As we are all overcoming the pandemic(s), new strategies for thinking about living our best lives are on the forefronts of our minds. I would like to be your conversational partner as you consider the changes you see yourself making in the next 5-10 years. I work with individuals, couples, families, groups, and even do team-building consultation within work settings.

My practice is founded on the belief that despite our life challenges, there is a silver lining behind each dark cloud that is waiting to be found. Whether the rainbow represents a diverse group of people coming together, the promise of a better life, or a pot of shining gold waiting at the end, one thing is true: rainbows are often a symbol of hope, and that is exactly what I hold for each person with whom I work: HOPE.

Hi, I’m Josh! I won’t lie – I kinda hate therapist bios. I know from personal experience, reading a slew of various bios whilst looking for a therapist can be extremely overwhelming. But I hope to be a slightly different kind of therapist for you. I value this work and take it seriously, which from my orientation requires that I bring my genuine, authentic self to the therapy room with you. This often means utilizing humor, creativity, and warmth. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life, but specialize in working with those who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. I specialize in individual therapy and couples therapy.

Therapy with my clients is not just passive listening. It is focusing on what your words, body, memory, and subconscious self are saying. Then we work to turn that in to actions that help you reach your goals that make your life worth living. I want to listen to you and I want to WORK with you. I am drawn to working with clients who want to grow and are open to creating healthy coping skills and mindsets. I also bring humor, transparent honesty, and irreverence into therapy as ways to help shift emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

For over 35 years, as both a fertility psychologist and OB/GYN with a strong interest in infertility, I have loved helping people on their fertility journey. Are you on a fertility journey? Have you experienced obstacles along the way? Perhaps nothing is as disempowering as struggling with fertility. For many of us, issues with fertility mark the first time that we've wanted our bodies to do something that they seem not capable of doing. Challenges with fertility are traumatic experiences. Is it any wonder why we may be struggling?

We all encounter pain and loss at various points throughout our lives. I believe that these experiences are complex and often derived from our relationships to people and systems. I hope to explore with you the ways you have attached meaning to these relationships and assist you in developing insight around how they have impacted various areas of your life. I also aim to help you understand your experiences in the context of other systemic influences. In doing so, I believe you will find more opportunities to experience healing and a greater sense of freedom and agency in the world.

Helping Little Kids With Big Feelings. Therapy for 2-6 year olds. Your kids is on the brink of being kicked out of daycare or preschool. The tantrums are out of control and nothing you have tried seems to help or, if it does help, it only helps for a day or two. Parenting shouldn't be this hard and you feel at a loss and frustrated. You may have reached out to therapists before but they are either full or won't work with kids that young. I can help. I have helped many families find calm and connection and have prevented many young kids from being kicked out of school.

Life often seems to move so quickly, barely allowing a chance to take in all that we have experienced. Especially in times of change or intense grief, you may want a space to process your experiences-both the mundane moments and major life-changing events-in order to understand what is going on inside. Therapy can be the perfect space to sort through your experiences, search for meaning and understanding, and discern the path forward that is right for you.

We all want to live rich meaningful lives. You’ve heard the phrase, “it’s about the journey not the destination.” All people, regardless of race, gender, geography, income, religion, experience moments in their lives when things become tough to handle, when no matter what resources or emotional fortitude we may have we are unable to manage. While some problems are more challenging than others, we all experience times in our lives when we begin to lose hope and doubt that a resolution will emerge.

How can I find a therapist in Decatur?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
