We all have moments of feeling isolated and “stuck.” This can stem from the difference between what your life looks like now and how you would like it to be. The stress of this disconnection can seep into all aspects of your world: socially withdrawing or getting into more arguments can lead to depression and relationship conflict. You might feel like what you do is never “good enough,” increasing anxiety. You might hide your stress by focusing on what you can control, particularly after traumatic events. Therapy can help bring back joy and spontaneity into your life, helping you feel more fulfilled and energized.

The most significant predictor of a successful therapy experience is the quality of the relationship between therapist and client. Building a safe, nurturing relationship is where I excel. My style is warm and highly interactive, best suited for clients who prefer a therapist who feels very "human." I assist clients to explore their thought patterns and corresponding emotional responses, and to identify unconscious assumptions they hold about themselves and the world, which inform behavior patterns. I also provide practical tools for regulating anxiety, managing depression, and processing grief.

I love working with highly motivated couples and individuals who are ready to do the hard work of healing. Maybe you’ve spent years getting degrees or a dream job at the expense of connection to others. Perhaps alcohol or drugs helped you cope for a while but they’ve created some problems of their own. The pressure to succeed can be traumatic and distance you from those you love. I want to help you realign to succeed in life and love!

As a therapist, I enjoy cultivating authentic relationships with clients and learning about the communities in which you both thrive in and have endured pain in. I’m curious about how you connect with others and how your past experiences impact your relationships and the energy you carry every day. Cross-cultural differences, family systems, and past trauma can make navigating our interpersonal relationships messy and cloud our thoughts. We’ll explore your narrative and the lens through which you see yourself to better understand and rebuild your relationship with yourself and others.

A large part of my life's purpose is to help women, men, and couples cope with and heal from life's traumas. I believe in therapy as a way to heal, starting with a caring relationship. Accidents, health issues, disease, child abuse (sexual, physical, emotional, or neglect), family problems, grief and loss, etc. can be traumatic. Problems add up and cause complex layers of stress and challenge over time. People say that I am warm and caring, I listen carefully, am patient, sensitive, and don't give up. I pay special attention to making the space safe for you.

Most therapists will say they specialize in what you’re dealing with. Given my decades of experience, I have become fairly scrupulous about the clients I choose to work with. I see therapy as collaborative. If you’re ready to put in the work necessary for change, you’ve come to the right place. If the following sounds like you, feel free to reach out to me now: You know what you want to change in your life; you realize that a commitment to change means that most of the work is going to be on your end; and you're ready to trust in someone to partner with you.

Sex has become an problem, and it's causing issues in your life or partnership. You're either dealing with libido problems (too low or high), sexual discomfort, or difficulties with intimacy. Maybe you're pulled to explore more of your sexual identity or desires. Maybe there’s a history of sex trauma that impacts how safe you feel. At the same time, you keep thinking sex shouldn't be this complicated! You've probably tried some solutions - or even tried some therapy - but it hasn't gotten any better and you're out of ideas. You need an experienced, compassionate therapist who really gets it and can help you enjoy a better sex life.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in San Francisco?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
