Our life experiences can feel so overwhelming at times, and when you're trapped in the middle of it all, it's hard to know how to move forward. Whether you're working through a life transition, a loss, the overwhelm of constantly taking care of others, or everyday stress, you deserve a space that is just yours to slow down, give space to your emotional experience, and find hope that things truly can feel different.

Are you someone whose life looks “good” from the outside, and yet it still feels like something is missing? You’ve accomplished a lot, but you’re not feeling the fulfillment you expected. Anxiety or a big life change – maybe a breakup, new job, new marriage, parenthood, change in family dynamic or move – has highlighted that you’re still not living the fullest, most authentic life you want to be living. Something is telling you that you need to make a shift (even if you’re not quite sure what it is). You want to gain deeper insight into yourself, your past and you’re ready to start living wholeheartedly and joyfully here and now.

You feel stuck. At this point in your life, you thought you’d have relationships down - your marriage or partnership would feel meaningful, hard but fulfilling. Instead your interactions with your partner, and perhaps your family, friends, or coworkers. leave you feeling misunderstood, frustrated and alone. How the hell are other people able to “click”? This wasn’t how you envisioned how love would feel in your life.

I see anyone within Wisconsin via telehealth - rural or urban, no more being put on the waiting list. I validate and encourage you to become aware of the coping strategies that do not serve you, such as avoidance, numbing, and not showing up for yourself. In the now, we explore how one may be stuck in the past or the future and unable to make healthy choices for today.

“Sensitivity isn't being wimpy. It's about being so painfully aware that a flea landing on a dog is like a sonic boom.” This is a quote from a favorite musician of mine, Jeff Buckley. I see sensitivity as a strength, not a deficit. As a therapist, I work hard to help my clients understand that oftentimes the parts of themselves that they view as weak are really their greatest strengths. The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves are very important. They are the lens through which we view everything- they color our world. The problem is that a lot of the time the narratives we have about ourselves are simply not true.

I am passionate about the work that I do: helping others enhance their lives in meaningful and lasting ways. You might feel stuck--maybe exhausted--from a struggle with anxiety, stress, and/or depression, leading to a less fulfilling and smaller world around you. Many of us never learned what to do with emotionally or physically distressing experiences; in fact, we're often told to "get over it", "don't worry," or "just do it," which is rarely helpful. It is possible, however, that despite your best efforts, the ways that you are reacting to painful thoughts, emotions, or sensations could actually be increasing your suffering.

I believe therapy is a collaborative process in which we will work together to determine your goals and then achieve them. Because I work both cognitive-behaviorally and psychodynamically, I am able to work with you on two different, but both very important levels depending on your goals. On one level, I can help you simply feel better and improve your coping skills. And on another level, and to the extent to which you are interested in doing so, I can help you understand the deeper roots of your symptoms and life patterns.

Life can be difficult as we try to navigate through the many changes and transitions that may present. There are times when we may feel overwhelmed, anxious, or experience an increase in stress that seems impossible to overcome. I work with clients to create a safe and open environment where you can share your thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement as you build skills to best address your concerns.

You’d do anything to feel okay again—to get rid of the fog that is clouding your every day. You might feel numb or disconnected and it’s affecting your happiness, relationships, and oftentimes, your productivity. Maybe you’ve tried therapy before, but something is still missing. You’ve started thinking and feeling like you’re not good enough or strong enough to handle life. Your sleep is all over the place, and you no longer enjoy the things you used to. I want you to know what you’re feeling is valid. You’ve come to the right place to find hope, healing, and answers.

My goal as a therapist is not to tell a client what they need to do but instead to help them problem-solve their situation and come up with their own solution. I am then able to provide the client with the assistance, guidance and support necessary in order for them to achieve their self-designed successful outcome.

I want to help empower you to be your best self. Sometimes we reach a point in life where we feel stuck and we ask ourselves if healing is possible. As humans, we can struggle when we carry unresolved trauma or stress, which can cause us to hold onto negative beliefs. These beliefs impact the way we see ourselves, others, and the world. I want to help you heal and grow from your past experiences, so that you can feel empowered and able to trust yourself to reach your potential.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Madison?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
