Everyone has life challenges. The best version of yourself can emerge with effective strategies to cope with distress. I provide hope for individuals and couples who are dealing with complex issues such as grief, relationship struggles, economic pressures, depression, spiritual/religious trauma caused by abuse, and many other stressors. My approach is trauma-informed—I see how past hurts affect the present.

I absolutely love what I do and I view each day as an opportunity to increase in love, peace, joy, and believing that all other increase (i.e. spiritual and material things) will naturally follow. Not only do I work to increase myself, but I also absolutely love helping others to increase in these areas. I primarily use Cognitive Behavior Therapy, with a mix of Solution based Therapy, and Person Center Therapy, and many different skills and interventions. I have worked in various settings; with clients from many different cultural/ethnic groups; and with various presenting problems. These presenting problems include major depression

**I am currently accepting new clients for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy only** Living can often land you on a different course than the one you expected. There are moments in life when you feel lost and unsure where you took a wrong turn. Maybe you’ve been feeling down or worried but are hesitant to bring it up to family and friends out of fear of burdening them. In these moments, it's important to have a space where you are safe to be yourself, a place to remind you that where you are at is not who you are.

My name is Chelsea DeKruyff, MA, LPC. I am a compassion-centered, neuroscience-informed psychotherapist in Austin, Texas. I specialize in working with PTSD and trauma-related disorders, ADHD, relationships and codependency, and identity issues. You may feel like your experience is too big, that it would overwhelm a listener. You may also think that your experiences are inconsequential and don't warrant the attention of a therapist. If you hold either view, I encourage you to open yourself to new possibilities.

Welcome! First, I would like to congratulate you on taking this step to reach out for support and practicing self-care. Life is ever changing and can sometimes not meet our expectations. This can lead to feelings of sadness, self-doubt, guilt, hopelessness, and we don't know what to do. Sometimes we can successfully process these changes in a healthy way and other times we may find ourselves depressed and anxious about the future. In these times it is important to reach out for support as we can become eclipsed by our emotions and not "see" a solution.

I specialize in providing therapy for adolescents and adults with ADHD and/or autism. My approach is rooted in understanding and addressing the unique challenges of neurodivergence, particularly in relation to unmet needs that often go unrecognized but profoundly impact well-being. These unmet needs may stem from differences in communication, social interaction, sensory processing, or executive functioning - and may show up as challenges in school, work settings, in relationships, or during parenting. In therapy, we explore these unmet needs with empathy and a commitment to fostering understanding and growth.

Individuals, couples, and families who come to my office are generally in some sort of pain or discomfort, moving back and forth between what is happening in their lives and what they want from life. Our conversations help shed light on why this is happening and what we can do to help you feel better. Although I use a variety of psychotherapeutic methods in my practice, the foundation of my work is in the relationship we create, the trust we establish, and the compassion we share. I welcome you to my practice.

As a play therapist, not only am I passionate about working with children and teens, but also adults who would like to explore their inner child to bring creativity, joy, and playfulness back into their lives. I often use art, storytelling, metaphor, or visual aids when appropriate to facilitate growth and learning key coping skills. I have helped many clients grow and move through the lingering effects and pains of trauma or life transitions, whether recent or long buried. I can help in facilitating growth and healing after difficult and often excruciating experiences, while progressing at your pace and comfort level.

Do you have trouble concentrating or sleeping because you spend time worrying you either said or did something wrong, or you will in the future? Is anger becoming your go-to reaction in the face of frustration or being disregarded? Not sure how to make tough decisions in relationships or at work? These are some common concerns I hear from clients. We will work together to make sense of these experiences and plan a way toward the goals you want to reach.

I love working with kids and their parents! Loud kids, active kids, mad kids, disruptive kids, depressed or anxious kids, unhappy teenagers with failing grades, school discipline issues or drug/alcohol problems. Whatever the problem, there is usually a fair amount of pain associated with it for everyone in the family. My practice is a safe, nurturing environment for kids and their parents to get help.

Are you feeling overwhelmed as a new mom? Are you used to "having it all together", or maybe your culture and other intersecting identities have made it taboo to ask for help? Do you often feel misunderstood for being "too sensitive"? Do think about breaking generational cycles as a new parent? Perhaps your pregnancy is not what you expected, or you're feeling confused about why postpartum is not the blissful experience you once envisioned. Are you struggling to balance being a working parent and showing up authentically in other areas of your life?

I like to think of therapy as investing in yourself. You're the one person you are guaranteed to spend your entire life with, and there's no breaks from being with you. Prioritizing your mental well-being is an important step in reaching a place where you can feel content and satisfied in the relationship with yourself. This, in turn, will move you forward in ways that help you create meaningful connections with others, build community, and stride toward your goals in life. That path might seem scary and uncertain, you might even think it impossible, but I want you to know it IS possible and you don't have to walk it alone.

Open and taking new clients! (telehealth) The "ideal client" I imagine working with is an individual that is characterized by having difficulty coping with anxiety, self-esteem, ADHD, relationships, and offer Christian based counseling. The needs of the client I imagine would be empathy and compassion towards that individual, space for their voice to heard and their story to be respected. I imagine my ideal client would desire "practical" but, "impactful" coping techniques to alleviate symptoms. I imagine my "ideal" client aspiring to regain "control" back into their lives and to feel "empowered."

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Austin?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
