Therapy is a shared exploration of your personal history, undertaken in an effort to locate the patterns, roadblocks and challenges to you becoming the desired version of who you wish to be. Finding the right therapist is crucial to this work. We need to feel seen, heard respected and understood by the person we entrust with our great journey of self-exploration. Many of us spend our lives trying to be someone other than ourselves; I am in service to helping you reimagine your story—past, present, and future. I will walk alongside you as you seek to understand your fears, anxieties and life's challenges.

Deep down you’ve known for a while that you have something potent to offer this world and your relationships. But bringing that knowing into daily life feels out of reach. Life can deal brutal cards, and habits can be hard to shake. You are capable and thoughtful, and you have mutually supportive relationships. You have grown and deepened through many of life’s challenges. But this threshold life has brought you is not something you can walk (or crawl) through alone. You are aware that life is impermanent, what you do with it matters, and there’s no time to waste not getting the care you need to be who you came here to be.

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."- Dr. Carl Jung. I am a clinical psychologist who has been in practice for 22 years working with men and women who have diverse backgrounds and experiences. My therapeutic style is warm, supportive and encouraging. I believe growth occurs when we learn to understand why we are struggling. Yet struggling alone can lead to feeling overwhelmed, lost, and stuck. Turning to someone for support and guidance often leads to self-awareness, clarity, direction and empowerment.

I can help if you are struggling with: anxiety, depression or other mood issues; aging or life-threatening illness; or relationship difficulties; or the consequences of living with serious mental disorders. I help people affected by loss including people dealing with grief, facing death, or serious illness, but if you think of your own situation you might realize that loss is playing a role in your search for a therapist. I also work with people who aren't deeply troubled, but are searching for growth in their work, relationships, or who are feeling the absence of a spiritual center in their lives.

Are you down on yourself, beating yourself up with thoughts like "I'm not good enough, I'm a failure, I should work harder than I do or I'll never get what I want out of life?" Do you focus on your flaws rather than your strengths and maybe have even forgotten what your strengths are? I can help you identify, challenge and change those distorted, negative, self defeating ideas to give you a more realistic, compassionate and affirming sense of yourself.

My approach to therapy is based on the individual needs of my clients, and most frequently I work with cognitive behavioral therapy approaches, as well as EMDR to affect the change that they are looking for. I find that both of these modalities help clients learn to better understand what motivates behavior that does not serve them.

Likely you are reading my profile because you or someone you love is suffering and in need of help. There is help. Based on my own experience and over 45 years of solid research concerning the therapeutic process (with the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group) we all have the desire and means to overcome difficulties from the past, some beyond our awareness. Our minds can plan ways to overcome even long-standing problems and suffering. I work collaboratively and compassionately with you to provide the safety and sheltering atmosphere that facilitates your natural impulse toward emotional health.

My work focuses on those who are attempting to navigate through serious psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse or living in a household with someone who struggles with substance abuse or addiction. I help teens, stuck young adults, and stressed families navigate the perilous journey to find serenity and sanity in their daily lives. Throughout my decade and a half of experience, I have learned that effective treatment starts with dignity and authenticity. These factors lay the foundation for the most important aspects of successful therapy: safety, honesty, and courageous vulnerability.

I enjoy working with individuals and couples who are motivated to understand and change some of the challenging patterns they have learned. My style, combined with excellent education, clinical training and life experience, gives me the ability to successfully help people find their way to happier lives and to unravel the mystery of how they ended up with grief, depression, anxiety or marital stress. I can help guide parents through the challenge of the teen years or with conflict that comes with being part of an extended family. My style is collaborative, engaged and supportive. I will work with you to overcome depression, anxiety, substance abuse or relationship issues that are holding you back from leading a more fulfilling life. In individual work we will explore your past experiences and family of origin that may have brought you to hold on to many negative unconscious beliefs and behaviors that are leaving you unhappy or unsuccessful in both your work and intimate relationships. In couples work we will work to dismantle destructive communication patterns, learn new ways of reaching toward your partner and increase levels of true intimacy.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in San Rafael?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
