I help queer and trans adults struggling with eating disorders and other roadblocks to embodiment, feel safe in their whole dynamic selves. Do you feel that if you were a little more perfect, you would feel belonging, love, or acceptance? That if you only showed up like that or just tried harder, then you would love who you are? Do you crave to feel safe in your own being but are unclear on how to get there? Perhaps you understand how complex you are as a person but notice an uncomfortable resistance when you try and unearth these new parts. I would love to support you in becoming your most authentic self.

I work with adults and couples, providing individual and couples therapy. I treat depression, anxiety, interpersonal difficulties, family of origin issues, OCD, and grief/loss. I also provide coaching for relationship skills and OCD symptom management. Life is difficult and often painful - much more so for some than for others. This pain brings people to therapy to engage in a process that is itself often painful; and yet they do so willingly and with hope. I am continually inspired by my clients as they engage in this process and come to see themselves in new ways, and make choices that allow them to live more fully.

For the time being I am working virtually using a telemedicine portal. So far it as been working out well!! Focusing on self and on family history can provide insights to meaningful change. Knowledge of who you are enables you to redirect anxiety and think differently about others in your family and larger social system. Challenges can become opportunities.

We all have unique lived experiences which impact the directionality and functionality of our daily lives. Processing these moments with a trusted confidant allows the opportunity to identify patterns and create change. As a Clinical Social Worker, I am especially interested in supporting clients as they navigate the stressors associated with life transitions including peer and family conflict, anxiety, academic pressures, behavioral concerns, and emotional dysregulation. Throughout my professional experiences across many settings, I have found that no therapeutic method is one-size-fits-all.

I believe that our mental health 'symptoms' are often our psyche's way of calling us to a different way of living. Each struggle in our lives is an opportunity for self-awareness and personal growth. Through many years of experience, I have developed an integrated approach utilizing the best practices in the field of psychotherapy. My approach adapts to the uniqueness of each individual and their own personal story, beliefs and interests. The foundation of my work is the development of a meaningful, trusting relationship with my clients.

Family experiences shape our functioning in relationships. Understanding the dynamics & patterns used can lead to better self management in relationships, whether in families, marriages, partnerships or in the workplace. As individuals increase self awareness they are better equipped to navigate the challenges presented to them. When individuals put efforts into changing themselves, I believe that interesting and creative ways of addressing challenges begin to emerge. Managing self requires the ability to find ways to step back from the moment to gain a broader perspective, to gather facts, to strengthen one's knowledge, and to think through a plan of action.

Start where you are! Everyone of us has experienced rough times in our lives. Sometimes we feel stuck in painful patterns. Sometimes we are overwhelmed with anxiety or sadness. I believe we have the inner resources and qualities we need to work through our issues, but we don’t always know where to start and we need help accessing those resources. I will help you find your way and teach you to use your own innate intelligence to move forward. After more than 25 years of helping clients, I bring compassion, mindfulness and life experience to my practice.

Central to my work as a therapist is helping people make necessary, life affirming changes, both personally and in their relationships. Living comes with depressions, anxieties, unexpected betrayals, work crises, illnesses, self-defeating behaviors and personal shames. At some time or another, we've all felt how hard "getting by" can be, how alone and overwhelming. Of equal importance, however, is the healthy courage it takes to ask for help. Toward that end therapy offers people an opportunity to feel deeply known, a chance to move forward with greater self-awareness, confidence, and self-acceptance.

I work with trans, nonbinary, and gender questioning individuals and loved ones seeking support in navigating gender related issues. This may mean help clarifying one’s own identity, navigating relationships with others, or accessing various types of gender care. As a former educator, I tailor my therapeutic methods to best meet your needs in a focused manner. I am a firm believer in carefully establishing a safe space for you to reflect, reassess, and refine what you think will best support you long term. Together, we will collaborate to develop strategies that promote and sustain independent skill building within your context. Meaningful growth can be uncomfortable, yet healing, and ultimately encourage you to thrive.

Are you newly secular? Did you leave a religion or are you in the process of doing so? You've been considering therapy for a long time, but still, you hesitate. It can be challenging to move forward and you sometimes feel haunted by the fears and dogma that were previously a part of your daily life. Whether or not you consider what you are experiencing as religious trauma, you want to make sure you find a therapist who won't make you feel guilty for leaving your former religion. You've got this nightmare scenario of finally finding a new therapist - only to end up ducking religious vocabulary, feeling judged, or defending yourself.

Accepting new clients! These are very stressful times. People are anxious, not sleeping well, finding it hard to cope, overeating, or turning to other not-so-healthy habits. Therapy, support, hypnosis and coaching CAN help! So can learning to take better care of yourself (including getting enough sleep!) and improving your coping skills. And hypnotherapy can help shift habits and patterns that don't serve you. Please Note: I no longer work with trauma, PTSD, and chronic pain.

I approach counseling with the understanding that we are biologically wired for connection. For many people mental health is compromised as our need for connection and meaning in our environment conflicts with cultural imperatives of independence and productivity. I view symptoms of distress as acts of resistance, not individual failings. For many, these acts of resistance result from injuries of marginalization and disconnection. I support clients to explore this resistance in the context of their current environment (friends, family, community). I work with clients from a place of empowerment, not pathology.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Burlington?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
