It has been my experience that all people need some support at times with understanding themselves and their relationships better. Most people interact with all types of relationships throughout the day. How we manage, interpret, and reflect about these experiences with ourselves and the one's closest to us matters. It is an important step towards understanding ourselves when we can gain insight on how we affect others and how others affect us in our daily lives. How we see ourselves and the meaning we make of our experiences can support a deeper knowing of oneself.

We all go through life learning by trial and error and that's good. But when we feel stuck, we need to pause. It's time to address whatever challenges are in front of us instead of continuing to push them away where they affect us without our awareness. When we pause, we are able to listen to what's inside of us. This is how we learn and become more aware of how we came to be where we are. When we pay attention, we understand, and with that comes self knowledge and self acceptance. This compassionate presence brings us to a new level of connection with ourselves, others, and the world at large.

My goal is for my clients to look forward to coming to therapy. I challenge my clients, working with them to gain insight into the actions that will bring the change they desire. I listen deeply to hear what is not being said and to bring these ideas into the room. My goal is to make you feel safe. I will hear and accept what you bring into the space and offer directional feedback to explore adjustments you may not have thought of. While I take our time very seriously we will hopefully laugh together. I see myself as a coach-therapist - unpacking events from the past to make change in the present.

We all have the capacity to live fulfilling and creative lives, but sometimes difficult circumstances overwhelm us, or we find ourselves in painful relational patterns. I see the transformative power of psychotherapy help people make lasting changes in how they relate to themselves and others, and move beyond protective patterns that limit their capacity for satisfaction and joy. In our collaborative relationship, we will explore your inner world, and when appropriate, the impact of family, gender, culture, sexual orientation, class, temperament, current relationships, life stage, and daily stressors on you and your life.

Every patient is unique, and so is every therapist. I have lived and practiced therapy in two very different cultures, which has given me insight into culturally specific and universal issues that underlie personal and interpersonal conflicts. I approach every client with acceptance and understanding, providing them with a compassionate space for exploring challenges and obstacles to happiness in themselves and their relationships. I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds, seeking to understand each client's worldview and to help them to discover their own solutions to the difficulties they face, including anxiety, depression, and relationship conflicts.

Healing and growth, which can be uncomfortable and painful, sometimes take time and support. These are shifts that we do not have to experience alone. Through authenticity, warmth and collaboration, I work with clients to cultivate understanding of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors and we work together to decrease stress and achieve defined goals. Whether it is anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues or health concerns, I integrate evidence-based practices to allow for the transformation of pain into growth.

I offer warm and collaborative psychotherapy with adults across different issues, stages in life, challenges, and triumphs. It is often in the presence of compassionate attunement that we can fully explore who we are - where we come from, the forces that shape us, how we are now, and living the life that is important to us. Therapy is your time, and it can be used to process, reflect, take inventory, heal, learn new strategies, identify your values, and find ways to live in integrity with those values. It is a place to find balance, introspection, create changes, celebrate strengths, explore nuance, and experience relief and joy.

There is nothing wrong with you. Like the humble cones that grow into majestic redwood trees, in this very moment everything you need to realize your dreams is waiting inside. I work with people who are open to transformation; who know the seed of goodness in their hearts, and are determined to allow it to bloom in this lifetime. I work with those who are ready to move towards their dreams with fierce and tender courage, not only for themselves, but for their families and communities. With kindness, warmth, and patience, together we can move towards greater connection and joy inside and in relationships.

Not accepting new clients
I work with clients virtually, in nature, or in person. I prefer to work with a client who will come to sessions even when it is challenging. I allow the therapy relationship to open up space for safe exploration of the realities of life, ways to cope with reality and improve spiritual and mental strength. Therefore, my client would demonstrate commitment to the therapy relationship, whether for brief therapy or long-term work, by doing the work necessary to understand the self and make necessary life decisions to maximize the availability of life energy.

Therapy doesn't have to be a long drawn out process. Whether you're suffering from depression, anxiety, or any other kind of challenge you want a therapist who can help you bring about change right from the start, to get to the deep roots of your problems and achieve results in as few sessions as possible. I specialize in a form of psychotherapy that is both depth-oriented and time-limited. I work with adults, adolescents and couples in my office in Berkeley, CA, and also work with many clients remotely by telephone.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Berkeley?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
