Joel Guarna

Psychologist , PhD

(207) 358-6188
I work with people who want to free themselves from anxiety, depression, past trauma, or problems with alcohol or drugs. I also work with people struggling with chronic health conditions and pain. You CAN learn to remove yourself from patterns that keep you stuck and keep you from living as fully as you would wish. I bring both a compassionate manner and state-of-the-art treatment approaches. My style integrates research-based cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) and innovative treatments like Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) that focus on mind/body health and treating whole individuals.
Since I first worked as a counselor many years ago, I have continually improved my approach through training, education, and many clinical experiences. Now, as a psychologist, I incorporate the latest treatment approaches while continuing to respect the 'art' of therapy and the unique aspects of each therapy relationship.
As a staff psychologist at the Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Boston, I gained experience using and training others to use cognitive-behavioral therapies. I would be glad to speak with you to determine if these strategies fit your needs.
