Originally from Virginia and after moving to Texas, I taught school for 14 years in Houston ISD and at Presbyterian School in the museum district. With increasing desire to help students with emotional and social issues, I returned to the University of Houston--Clear Lake and earned my master's degree in Clinical Psychology. I completed my intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy at Menninger with Shari Manning, PhD and Karyn Hall, PhD. Starting in January of 2013, I worked as a practicum student and LPC-Intern at The DBT Center of Houston.
DBT has been shown to be effective with borderline personality disorder and patients struggling with mood dysregulation, self harm, and suicidal concerns. Skills groups teach clients: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT therapy consists of individual sessions, skills groups, phone coaching, and traditionally a team consultation.
I am providing informed DBT (I am missing the team component) at this time as I look for a DBT team for consultation. My teaching experience has proved to be invaluable in relating to children, adolescents, and adults and making the skills groups informative and pleasant to attend.
