Bringing about positive change in our lives is often much harder than we would like. During challenging times we need care and support from someone who will also challenge us to reach our goals. Growth is a key aspect of being human and as a therapist, it is my role to walk with my clients and support them as they travel down the path they have chosen.

You do not have to have lived through something literally life-threatening to be a trauma survivor. If you didn't get your basic or emotional needs consistently met during infancy and early childhood, you likely struggle in your adult relationships. You might be overly clingy, avoidant, or self-sabotaging with your friendships and romantic partners. Or maybe, for you, it shows up as anxiety, avoidance, dissociation, low self-worth, poor boundaries, and even self-destructive behaviors. This is called complex trauma or attachment-based trauma, and it can be healed!

Life is demanding. And if you struggle with recurrent or chronic pain, anxiety, depression, trauma, the mental and emotional load of parenting, or other challenges, life's demands may leave you feeling over-burdened and out of touch with your sense of agency and well-being. As we explore and restore your strengths, you'll begin to have more agency over your behaviors, thoughts, emotions, and physiological reactions to yourself and your relationship with the people and world around you.

I'm passionate about supporting individuals through the transitions of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood. Pregnancy and parenthood can be a complex time, and you may find yourself overwhelmed by feelings that are preventing you from experiencing life as you would like. Some of these feelings may be new, while others are old feelings and struggles that have returned in a new light. Asking for help can be hard, but your feelings are valid, and you deserve support. I offer a safe and nonjudgemental space for you to feel heard, respected, and understood.

I believe you have the potential to realize the desires deep within your heart. It takes courage to confront fears and overcome mental and emotional hurdles that block our best intentions. Circumstances most often out of our control can cause feelings of doubt, lonelines, lack of fulfillment and even a loss of hope. In our attempt to quiet an overwhelming sense of distress, we sometimes adopt beliefs and behaviors that are at best, self-compromising. I would be honored to accompany you on your journey towards wholeness. Together we will embrace truth, transcend pain and create a more meaningful life through freedom and choice.

I have a strong interest in helping individuals in the midst of life transition and/or turmoil find vision, connection and greater meaning for their lives. Life transitions can range from the dark and difficult times when you are unsure what to do, to the excitement of new opportunities. As a licensed clinical psychologist with a masters degree in theology, I enjoy connecting the personal ways individuals make sense of their lives with the larger body of knowledge achieved through clinical training and the current and evolving knowledge base of the psychology and neuroscience field.

With more than 40 years of experience, I believe that psychotherapy can provide a "safe container," a non-judgmental place, in which clients can confront their issues in complete confidentiality without fear of rejection. There is no blueprint for this process; together we create the path leading to each client's inner wisdom and healing.

Even daily life experiences such as work, parenting, caregiving, or the experience of racism can take toll on our moods and functioning. If they are not addressed, depression, anxiety, and other stress-related concerns can keep us from being fully able to engage in our lives.

Sometimes, we wonder if change is possible. Maybe you are wondering if you have to feel this way, shouldering the load for yourself and others to remain “strong.” Maybe you debate if reaching out to someone would actually help, or if it’s better to keep swallowing the guilt and shame that surrounds your sadness and anxiety. Maybe it feels like the past and the present are too overwhelming, and you aren’t able to find the motivation and energy that you once had. The truth is that you don’t have to feel this way, and that you truly can become the person you want to be.

Are you searching for a therapist? There must be a strong fit between the client and the therapist for the work to be productive. I welcome clients looking for a non-judgmental, strength based, solution and action focused approach. I enjoy working with clients who seek a no nonsense, pragmatic approach to life challenges. I do understand that life can sometimes seem irrational and out of control. I believe deeply in the capacity of the human spirit to heal and transcend what may seem insurmountable circumstances and to thrive. Clients can expect a warm, supportive and empathetic relationship when we decide to work together.

Although my therapy approach is often person-centered and strength based, I draw from many modalities depending on each client's unique needs. IMAGO therapy for couples going through challenging times can help open up channels of communication and strengthen empathy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for individuals struggling with depression and anxiety can restructure and reframe patterns of thought in order to reset their outlook on life.

Do you find yourself making time for everything and everyone, but find it challenging to take the time to focus on your own compassionate care? So many of us prioritize the loving care of our family and friends while neglecting to tend to ourselves - as though we are our own most treasured other. Too often we allow our overly harsh inner voice of self-judgment to serve as our most oppressive critic, draining us of the momentum needed to manifest our fullest potential and the life we truly desire. Unleash the potential of your best self and stop settling for the comforts of habit or the stagnation of fear. You are worth it!

Hi, I’m Josh! I won’t lie – I kinda hate therapist bios. I know from personal experience, reading a slew of various bios whilst looking for a therapist can be extremely overwhelming. But I hope to be a slightly different kind of therapist for you. I value this work and take it seriously, which from my orientation requires that I bring my genuine, authentic self to the therapy room with you. This often means utilizing humor, creativity, and warmth. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life, but specialize in working with those who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. I specialize in individual therapy and couples therapy.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Decatur?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
