Welcome! I believe it takes just the right combination of bravery and hope to enter counseling, so I am happy that you are here. I am committed to helping people utilize their own knowledge of themselves and build a healthier, happier, and more resilient life. It is completely natural to struggle and experience difficulties. Sometimes these difficulties come from experiencing traumatic events, managing difficult relationships, and even feeling as if we do not know ourselves and what we really want out of life. If you are having problems in relationships, with self- esteem, or managing life stress, counseling can help.

Words may not be enough to express what you're going through. You need someone to be patient and sincere with you and your deepest wounds. You need a place to let it all out, still feel accepted, loved, and appreciated. You may feel stuck and lost. We can find what helps you open up towards growth while finding your way back to your natural insight and power. Whether it be imagination, music, art, storytelling, movement, or general creating of metaphors to make sense of this wild world, I enjoy holding space for You and for those wanting deeper connections to their inner wisdom.

In an unprecedented world, we have unprecedented feelings. Whether you’re still healing, or sprouting beyond wreckage, it would be a tremendous honor to be there with you. Every person I meet has a special set of challenges and a unique personality. As we get to know each other, I can tailor our approach to therapy over time to pull from different bases of knowledge. I have an ongoing commitment with myself to decolonizing my therapy practice. Together, we can achieve the velocity of escaping the stories we have been socialized into without our permission.

We’re wired toward a sense of belonging and connection to ourselves and others, but we all have strategies to protect us and adapt to life's challenges. Sometimes these inadvertently impact our mental/emotional health and get in the way of the flow of life, leaving us feeling confused, stuck, or disconnected. Other times, those strategies feel suddenly inadequate in the face of circumstances outside of our control. Giving space to layered, complex thoughts, emotions, and experiences and experimenting with new ways of being with a compassionate, well-trained therapist can support you in navigating a life that feels more like yours.

I chose to enter the counseling field as a teen after I saw a counselor myself. My experience opened me up to learning to cope with things in a way that I had never learned. I was so changed by this process that I decided I wanted to give others what had been given to me.

I have worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 23 years. I enjoy working with a wide range of individual concerns, including depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, abuse/trauma, addictions, and phase of life issues. I find that many of us have expectations that life will be better, that we will finally be happy, when we reach a certain milestone, or when we do what makes others happy, or if we work hard.

Lets explore your life experience in a new and exciting way. I see suffering as an opportunity to break free from old patterns, habits, and ways of thinking that are not working for you anymore. It's a call from deep inside saying, "something needs to shift". This shift can come from exploring a relationship to a substance that you are using, and the pain, anxiety, depression, or a general sense of not loving your life that may come with it. Your unique journey is here right now, and experiencing it from a nonjudgmental perspective can be a vital ingredient to moving past whatever is holding you back from living your best life.

As a clinician, I am passionate about working with individuals aged 16+ from different walks of life. I believe we all are facing our own distinctive experiences in life. Criminal convictions, substance abuse, loss of a loved one, and financial strain are just some of the barriers life can throw at us. I see the worth in helping others on their journey-whatever that may- be towards living life to the fullest in accordance with your own values and aspirations.

Life is full of change and transition. Sometimes, we choose to change and we feel in control. Other times, change happens without our permission and it feels like someone else is making all the decisions for us. Whether you choose change or not, the process can take a toll on your emotional/physical/spiritual health, your relationships, and your sense of purpose in the world. It takes immense courage to create (or re-create) your life. It requires looking within to determine what’s truly important, rather than just accept what others tell you is right for you. I’m here to help you regain a sense of control, purpose, and peace.

A mental health diagnosis does not define who you are or have the final say in the quality of your life. I believe that education is power and the more a person understands their condition the better they can manage life and relationships. I also believe that being allowed to share your journey is an honor. Therapy can be freeing as it inspires personal growth and hopeful outcomes.

I love working with adults (age 18 and up) on anxiety, depression, attachment styles, and body image issues. My ideal clients are those who feel like they have been repeating habits and behaviors that are unhealthy and are wanting to learn how to change those patterns. I teach clients how to identify personal and interpersonal needs that are currently unmet and how to set more effective boundaries. I enjoy assisting clients who want to better understand their behaviors and learn how to develop self-awareness skills to help them feel more in control of their lives.

It is common to see therapy as a journey to discover the Self. We have familiar maps, or patterns, which can lead to unhappiness or self-sabotaging behavior. You may find yourself stranded in all-too-familiar territory with little idea of how to move on. Like many journeys, it can be an exciting adventure but can also be full of unknowns. I see my role as your guide, to blaze new “routes” together that have worked well for others. As Helen Keller once said: “What I am looking for is not out there, it is in me.” I truly believe the exquisite joy you find by falling in love with yourself is a journey you don’t want to miss!

Sometimes a moment, or moments, in your life will haunt you. It can make you feel disconnected, like a stranger to yourself and your life. I believe we all have different ways of processing pain. I have worked with folks who struggle to stay out of the hospital and folks who simply need a connection. I enjoy being present and meeting the needs of both types. I really work hard to meet you where you are and help you identify what you need to get to where you want to be. No one asks to stay lost and miserable and I appreciate the privilege of witnessing the transformation from pain to clarity.

Accepting new clients! Welcome! Growth and change as a human being is not a linear path and that can be incredibly frustrating. I am deeply committed to helping individuals navigate through the ups and downs of life's fluctuations. Together we can look at thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to gauge what is currently working and where we can develop some new skills. You may be an ideal client for me if you're feeling ready to learn to ride the wave of constant changes and to focus on what we as humans can control.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Asheville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
