The great Italian novelist Elsa Morante once said, "It does not matter how the facts occur in life, it matters how they are told." I love this quotation because it speaks to the power of words to transform our distinct realities. You are the author of your own life – but perhaps you've found yourself stuck with writer's block or repeating the same old story. Together we will precisely locate what chapters from your past need some editing, so you can start writing, this time in a new way.

Hoping that your situation will turn out for the better, especially during difficult times, is extremely important; hope alone however, will only take you so far. My aim, as your therapist, is to assist you in identifying the connection between your beliefs, behaviors, and the challenges you're experiencing. I use sound therapeutic models to frame our therapuetic approach in session, and together, we'll work to enhance your outlook, build your skills, and reframe your life. I truly believe you're remarkable and more resilient than you know; my goal is to help you see that. Let's go All In, together.

Life is full of challenges and obstacles that we often feel we are unable to overcome. My goal is to help you discover your inner strength and motivation to keep moving forward, even when it feels too painful. I find that building strong relationships with others helps keep us emotionally regulated and feeling connected. I place heavy importance on building a strong therapeutic relationship during our initial sessions. This will help create a compassionate, safe, and growth-fostering environment where progress is inevitable.

Do you find yourself thinking about the fights you've had with your loved ones? Conflicts, either with family, friends or partners has an impact on how you relate with other people. During personal conflict, the rush of emotions may cause you immediate shut down, exposure to vulnerabilities or damaging behaviors from unresolved past trauma. Conflict, unfortunately is inevitable in any relationship but you can have the skills to solve them every time.

Deciding to take that first step to better yourself and change your life is tough when you are afraid the person you have chosen to help you just may not be able to or even understands your needs. As your therapist, I recognize wholeheartedly how important that first step is. Together, one of our focuses initially is building confidence, comfort, and rapport with each other, so that as we walk together through your issues, you can feel good about doing so. We will develop a plan of care specifically for your individual needs rather using than one specific method based on “identifying markers".

There is nothing more isolating than feeling like you’re alone in your experiences—constantly Googling what “normal” would feel like. Your life feels everything but normal, and in an attempt to make your life seem like everything’s fine, you don’t talk about your anxiety. You don’t talk about the crippling stress you feel at work. You don’t talk about how you haven’t eaten today. You desperately want to feel normal, and you want everyone to think everything is okay. But you are far from okay. You constantly wonder if other people feel the way you do.

Difficult memories, trauma and similar stressors can erode our sense of safety and stability. One may be left feeling numb, isolated, empty, misunderstood or unable to connect, or as if a mask is always on. One may feel always on alert or feel guilt for not “getting over it.” My message is: you are not alone! Whether a vehicle collision or relationship challenges, big secrets or hurricane, trauma and distressing events can impact our ability to cope. When you feel overwhelmed & vulnerable and your support systems don’t feel like enough, seeking outside help is the courageous next step.

We are all supposed to drink enough water, get enough sleep, exercise, save money, make money, work hard while having work/life balance, be a great spouse/parent/sibling/child, travel more...the list is endless. We are taught to engage life at a grueling and intense pace that is becoming increasingly difficult in the backdrop of a tumultuous world in crisis. I don't view mental health in a vacuum; sometimes depression and anxiety are appropriate and healthy responses to stressful and unprecedented life events. I teach solution-oriented skills to address feelings, to move through life in a healthy way that honors your humanity.

It is no longer acceptable to suffer in silence. Regardless of your age, your friends, your family and what your peers may say, asking for help takes a lot more courage than suffering in silence. There is no shame in taking control of your life and making the courageous decision to want and expect more joy and peace in your life. I believe in empowering individuals to take inventory and control of their lives. Things can always be better and it is up to you to determine when, where and what that looks like. It is my joy and responsibility to help bring about the ‘how.'

In facing challenges we often come across during these trying times it can often leave us with feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. However, we have the greater choice to respond rather than react in the most profound and positive manner to what we may encounter along this arduous road to finding a better you. Throughout this purpose driven life of mine, I have had the greatest of opportunities to build with adolescents, adults, couples, families, and large groups.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Houston?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
