I am a licensed psychologist with more than 20 years of experience. I use both a skill building and a developmental approach in therapy. Skill development includes affect management, stress/anger management, and resolving marital conflict and communication problems. A developmental approach considers your unique story of childhood and how you became the person you are today. Approaches include Attachment Theory, Schema Therapy, and brain development.
Recalling and discovering old memories and feelings--and sharing them--is part of the process of change. This integrates the past with the present, and your emotional self with your logical self. The goal is to identify and resolve old belief systems that once worked, but now interfere with your happiness as an adult.
Changes occur by making implicit memories explicit, in the presence of an empathetic person, promoting integration of the mind, moving one forward to resolve maladaptive schemas, thereby changing the structure of the brain through the process of neuroplasticity.
