Everyone experiences difficulties in life and there is no time like the present to find help supporting the emotional weight you may be feeling. Whether it is the pandemic, the economy, or your personal experiences, external situations can have a serious impact on your internal self. By working as a team, my goal is to help you explore the reasons why you have these negative emotions and begin the process of lessening the impact they are having on your life. Emotional Regulation has been made harder through the current cultural climate and my hope is that together we can make your ability to feel at peace with yourself a reality.

There's a difference between wandering around in the past and purposefully connecting what we've been through to our current situations. If you are looking for someone to help connect what you've been through to what you are going through now, and to identify new ways to shape your future, then I am here to help. Whether we are discussing relationship patterns, past trauma, mood disturbances or otherwise, we can work together to identify what you expect from yourself and others, and how you respond to those expectations. We will figure out how and where new expectations and ways of meeting the world will reshape your life.

Life is unpredictable and challenging. Whether due to a life changing event that occurs in the blink of an eye, or circumstances existing for years or even decades, inevitably we all experience periods in our lives where we feel overwhelmed, isolated, inadequate, depressed, anxious, or even broken. Often these feelings are the byproduct of stress or even trauma. If not properly managed, the effects of stress and trauma will eventually have a detrimental effect on our careers, and, more importantly, our personal relationships and families. In some cases, our personal relationships may actually be the source of the stress or trauma.

Finding a way to live our lives aligned with our goals and values is one of the most meaningful steps we can take to decrease suffering and increase a sense of purpose in our life. Unfortunately, over our lifetime, we may have learned ways to engage with the world which get in the way of our own successes. We may have become stuck in patterned ways of thinking and acting, which become second nature and can be difficult to change without targeted work. This can lead to feeling discouraged or even hopeless.

I’ve been a therapist for a long time and I’ve developed a style of my own, characterized by the use of humor and direct communication. Life is tough — we all struggle — with depression, anxiety, relationships, work, family, etc. it is often helpful to discuss life’s dilemmas with an objective listener. It is my goal to help each client find the path that is right for them.

Do you have a stack of partially read self-help books collecting dust in the corner? Maybe you had hopes they would provide the information you were seeking to stay cool and collected through challenging times - because let’s face it, 2020 was pretty much a shitshow. It is alright to feel overwhelmed, confused, and uncertain. When stressors create intrusive thoughts of not being enough or fears of abandonment, it can be helpful to talk to someone. Whether you are looking for coping strategies to build resiliency through life transitions or wanting to explore deeper parts of yourself and how you relate to the world, I am here.

When we experience hardship without community support, we learn to defend against emotions that would be simply too much to hold alone. I identify as a pansexual genderqueer woman and I honor therapy as a space where all of our identities are important. I work with the nervous system and show up as my real, genuine self. My clients typically come to therapy when their defenses hold them back from loving relationships or a fulfilling life.

My approach to therapy is centered around the idea that we are all whole people made up of various parts of ourselves. We have motivated parts, anxious parts, angry parts, protective parts, inner child parts, and many others. Some of our parts feel stronger than others. Maybe you have an anxious or angry part that feels out of your control. Maybe you have a part of you that feels the need to people please, or one that is drawn to toxic relationship patterns. You might be aware of the areas of your life you would like to change, but you have certain parts that tend to make change difficult.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
